Our home in Carcassonne is still the same little two-up, two-down house, in the shadow of the medieval city walls, that we bought in 1989. Today, we go backwards and forwards depending on commitments, and I suppose we're there six to eight times a year. Then, as they got a bit older, we spent four months in France and eight months in England because of school terms. We're not able to spend so much time in Carcassonne now, but when our children were little we used to spend six months in Sussex and six months in Carcassonne. It was completely random.īut when we went there for the very first time – in November 1989 – I got off the train and just thought: 'Oh God, I belong here!' I mean, it sounds so corny, but that's what it felt like, even though I knew nothing about the place, nothing about the region, nothing about the history. Greg used to live in France and a friend of a friend of my mother-in-law knew somebody who was an estate agent in Carcassonne.
